Carla Fendi Foundation

A special collaboration with the Carla Fendi Foundation for the 64th edition of the Festival dei Due Mondi. The project celebrates the work of Anna Mahler, Sol LeWitt and the Mahler & LeWitt Studios whilst recognising the services of our patrons, Marina Mahler and Carol LeWitt, with the Premio Carla Fendi.

For the duration of the festival a detail of Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawing #1119 will be installed across the facade of Teatro Caio Melisso Spazio Carla Fendi and a sculpture of Anna Mahler’s will be placed in the theatre foyer.

The Carla Fendi Foundation have commissioned three documentary films, directed by Gabriele Gianni, which look at the work of  Anna Mahler, Sol LeWitt and the Mahler & LeWitt Studios.

A series of Open Studios events with displays of work by current and former artists in residence. The program also incorporates the VIAINDUSTRIAE and Mahler & LeWitt Studios Quasi-Book program with Kolxoz Collective and an exhibition with Rä di Martino at the Torre Bonomo.

Tai Shani – The Neon Hieroglyph

Turner prize winning British artist Tai Shani presents a site-specific sculpture installation on the Fontana di Piazza del Mercato, in the heart of the old town of Spoleto, inspired by her research into psychedelics, feminism and myth. The installation is a co-production of the Carla Fendi Foundation and Mahler & LeWitt Studios. The Neon Hieroglyph also exists as a film in nine episodes – we will be presenting Episode 7, which relates specifically to the region of Umbria, in Spoleto’s gallery of modern art (Palazzo Collicola – Galleria d’Arte Moderna G. Lina Hermsdorf presents her video installation Bona Dea, which she developed during residencies at the Mahler & LeWitt Studios in 2018 and 2019. The work is centered around a little-known sacred forest near Spoleto, dedicated to the ancient Roman goddess Bona Dea, a deity venerated exclusively by women.

The presentation will take place on stage before the concluding concert of the Festival dei Due Mondi, conducted by Maestro Pappano. The prize money will fund a number of fellowships at the Mahler & LeWitt Studios over the course of the next five years.
